Additional Publication InformationThe story was written in 1878 and originally published in Sep 1881 anonymously in “The Gentleman’s Magazine” as “How Mephisto Was Caught”. It was also condensed in “The Chess-Player’s Chronicle”. In 1882, “Brentano’s Chess Monthly” printed “How the Devil Was Caught, a Chess Legend”. It was a somewhat expanded version of the story, where it was revealed that the original authorr was Charles Gumpel, the inventor of Mephisto. The story, “Mephisto at the Paris Exposition of 1878” was written in French by Alphonse Delonny with Gumpel’s consent, based on this particular story.
