It was also condensed in “The Chess-Player’s Chronicle”. In 1882, “Brentano’s Chess Monthly” printed “How the Devil Was Caught, a Chess Legend”. It was a somewhat expanded version of the story, where it was revealed that the original authorr was Charles Gumpel, the inventor of Mephisto. The story, “Mephisto at the Paris Exposition of 1878” was written in French by Alphonse Delonny with Gumpel’s consent, based on this particular story. |
